Further Maths

Head of Faculty: Miss Richardson – k.richardson@stbenedicts.essex.sch.uk

The AQA Level 2 Further Maths Qualification provides an introduction to the subject at a higher level than typically found at GCSE, with the possibility of subsequent, accelerated progress into AS and A Level Further Mathematics.

The course is invite only; it will be offered to students aiming to get a minimum of a grade 7 at GCSE with a particular encouragement for the students who are looking to take mathematics at A-level

For the learners who will not continue with mathematics beyond Year 11 this qualification provides a worthwhile and enriching course in its own right.

The qualification provides a broad, coherent and satisfying course of study. It will encourage you to develop more confidence in, and (hopefully) a positive attitude towards, mathematics. It consolidates and develops GCSE level mathematical skill and encourages you to recognise the importance of mathematics and its contribution to the world around us. It also provides a strong mathematical foundation for those who go on to study mathematics at a higher level, those who go on to study other subjects which make use of mathematics or those students progressing to vocational qualifications or directly into employment.

The specification content is set out in six distinct topic areas although questions will be asked that range across these topics.
1 Number
2 Algebra
3 Coordinate Geometry (2 dimensions only)
4 Calculus
5 Matrix Transformations
6 Geometry
The first four topics are an extension of GCSE Mathematics, the last 2 topics are new materials that are essential foundations for going into A level Mathematics

The AQA qualification is an assessment by two 1hr 45 min Exams worth 80 marks each (Calc/Non-Calc).
